INTERDISCIPLINARY TEAM DEVELOPS INNOVATIVE APP FOR CERVICAL CANCER PREVENTION

1024 423 ARROSILAB

This project led by Silvina Arrossi, PhD (CEDES/CONICET) and her team, aims to develop an app to increase population´s knowledge about Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and cervical cancer, reduce the psycho-social impact of HPV-testing and increase adherence to follow-up.

HPV testing has become the main strategy for cervical cancer prevention. However, HPV positivity can have a psychosocial negative impact among tested population. In addition, information provided by health providers about HPV is often insufficient, what can generate difficulties in understanding HPV-test results and follow up steps.

Apps are increasingly being used as tools to improve communication between population and health professionals. This app will constitute a low-cost, easy to use tool that will radically change how HPV-tested population access evidence-based information.

The study is led by researchers of Centro de Estudios de Estado y Sociedad (CEDES) y del Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET). The project has the support of the Argentinean League against Cancer (LALCEC), the Argentinean Society of Lower Genital Tract and Colposcopy, and the Secretary of Health of Ituzaingo, Buenos Aires. In addition, researchers from the World Health Organization (WHO), International Agency of Research on Cancer (IARC), University of New Mexico, the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health and the Centro Javeriano de Oncología (Colombia) are taking part. It is supported by the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health under an Award R21 to develop mHealth solutions.
